This gem is built directly from the source code provided in the `xapian-bindings` release provided on xapian.org/download. As such, it is small (doesn't embed whole copies of Xapian) and builds against whatever version of Ruby you're installing it in. On the other hand, you do need to have the xapian-core development libraries and headers already installed.
